The BMW Group focuses on electric cars: “By the end of 2021, we plan to have a total of one million electric cars on the road,” said Oliver Zips, chairman of the board of directors of BMW AG, at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). In Norway, three out of every four new BMW Group cars sold are powered by electric motors.
Hydrogen combustion technology can be a real solution, especially over long distances. The BMW Group expects that demand for this technology will grow in the second half of the next decade and launch a fleet of automotive tests with fuel solutions in 2022. The company introduced this year's IAA BMW i Hydrogen NEXT development car.
Zipse confirmed the plan announced in June to significantly increase the pace of expansion of electric mobility: 25 electrified models will be available in 2023. More than half of these 25 models will be fully electric.
The basis for this is provided by flexible automotive architectures for all-electric cars, hybrid or heat engines, as well as a very flexible manufacturing system. Consequently, a company can quickly respond to local market requirements.
